Chances are your baby’s getting more sleep than you realise and probably more sleep than you are. But with things constantly changing, it can help to have some tricks up your (pyjama) sleeve to help everyone get the zzz’s they need.

Try to keep your baby’s room at a steady temperature, around 18C (65F) is ideal. Too hot or too cold could disturb their sleep.

If baby wakes in the night make sure you keep things calm and quiet. Keep lights low, and noise to a minimum. This may make it easier to soothe them back to sleep.

Try to stick to your sleep routine (bath, massage, change, story, lullaby etc.) as much as possible.

Try not to settle baby, give them the chance to settle by themselves. If you rock or feed your baby to sleep, they may come to expect it.

Bear in mind that as your baby grows you’ll probably need to adjust your routines to suit their changing sleep requirements.

Ask your partner for help so you can get some sleep too. For instance, they could take over the winding and changing after an early morning feed, so you can get back to sleep.
